CRAFT WITH A CAUSE
One of the many ways that Clever Octopus serves our community is through recruiting local crafters, patrons and supporters to donate their time, skills and resources to meet the expressed needs of organizations both locally and abroad.
Our program “Craft-with-a-Cause,” launched in January 2020, allows us to leverage both the vast inventory of goods in our warehouse and access to crafters like you, in order to host community donation drives. A number of unique opportunities have since emerged:
In January, we partnered with the Animal Rescue Crafters group to host several crochet and sewing workshops to create medical care goods for rescued animals of Australia in response to catastrophic bushfires. Hand-crafted products included knitted/crocheted pouches for baby kangaroos and swaddling wraps for bats.
We also rallied crafters to create face masks and personal protective equipment for health-care workers at the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Volunteers used mask- templates manufactured by the non-profit Make Salt Lake consisting of upcycled donated materials from Clever Octopus.
In the spring, we hosted an art supplies donation drive launched by the Native Youth Arts Initiative to donate 161 pounds of materials, including school supplies for youth and families of the Navajo Nation.
As the fall season rolled around, volunteers with sewing skills of all levels helped make over 800 Pencil Pouches for the Granite School District and the Road Home Family Center in Midvale, using fantastic donated fabric samples leftover from textile industries.
Clever Octopus sees these initiatives as a great way to invest our resources where needs are expressed and to provide a space where crafters and artists can use their skills to positively impact their community.
Our Latest Craft-with-a-Cause!
Hygiene Kit Donation Drive!
Time Frame: November to mid-December
Our latest Craft-with-a-Cause is donating handmade (by you!)pouches turned into hygiene kits for partners seeking to empower vulnerable community members in SLC.
We will split these among two organizations: the The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City, which does amazing work providing crucial health, economic well-being, career advancement, and citizenship support services to resettled Refugees; and to the SLC chapter of SWOP, a nation-wide network dedicated to fighting for the health, dignity and safety from violence and poverty of people in the sex work industry. These organizations consistently have a need for hygiene and home and health goods with special material requests for the approaching winter.
Please join us and help meet our deadline by December 4!
